Thank you to the wonderful parents who put together a wonderful morning tea for staff last Friday for World Teachers’ Day. It was very much appreciated!

Planning for 2019
The term is well under way and while we are still focussed on teaching and learning, we are planning for 2019.  Our projected student numbers for the new year are very healthy, but historically, we have always found that there is some movement of families at the end of the year, and generally a number of last minute enrolments in the last week of term or the first week of the new year.

It is extremely helpful for our planning processes if families can let us know as soon as your circumstances change.  If you have a child who is eligible to attend Prep in 2019, or know of a family yet to enrol in any year level, please complete enrolment paperwork as soon as possible so that we can make appropriate consideration for your child’s class placement.

Queensland school enrolments will top 800,000 in 2019, including 48,000+ Preppies – and parents can start getting ready now. Extensive research shows calm, positive parenting helps kids adjust to school routines, and do better socially and academically. Parents can start doing a free Triple P – Positive Parenting Program any time. www.triplep-parenting.net

Air Conditioning Replacement
Our school will be undergoing some works commencing late this term, to replace air conditioners across the school.  The works will likely continue into the start of the school year, causing some disruption.  I will be working with the Departmental contractor and school staff, to minimise the disruption as much as possible.

Student Leadership
We have been working with our Year 5 students to determine our future leaders of the school.  Students have nominated for School Captain positions initially, and the Year 5 teachers and I will shortlist applicants to deliver a speech during the assembly time in Week 5.  I have been impressed by the calibre of applications so far, and look forward to the opportunity to meet with each applicant over the next two weeks.  All other leadership positions will be considered in the new year, to allow new students to the school the opportunity to apply for a position.

Ready Reading
Volunteer with the Ready Reading program to support children’s reading. Training dates will soon be released for Toowoomba and the South East Region. Register to become a Ready Reading volunteer today. www.volunteeringqld.org.au/readyreading

Health Kids Survey
Sport and Recreation want to know what young people love about being physically active. Students are encouraged to have their say on the future of sport and active recreation in Queensland by completing an online survey for those 18 years and younger before it closes on Friday 19 October.

War on Waste

A group of passionate students have banded together to solve the school's waste problems.  We have identified many things to improve such as:  creating gardens, putting the right waste in the right bins and in long term, selling produce such as herbs and vegetables that we grow at school.

At the present, we are raising awareness of waste problems and trying to get others on board.  Also, we are raising money for gardens and future plans.

The Crew will start to sell produce donated from their own gardens from next Monday, while we wait until our gardens at school are up and running.  We will be selling:

  • Monday mornings before assembly at the Hall

  •

  • Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons on the Handball Courts from 2.50-3.10 pm.

  •

  • Come and say hi to Armelle, Lyra, Ida, Stirling, Methuli, Gemma and Eliza during these times to hear some of our ideas or support us by buying our donated produce.

  •

If you would like to help us in any way, please look out for the green letter that went home to all families this week, and send it back to the Office.  We thank anyone who has already contributed.

Also look out for information on how to order Compost-a-paks.  These bags are plastic free and will break down with organic waste into compost to nourish the environment.

You will also hear about how you can contribute to the Queensland container return scheme very soon!

Kind regards,
Gemma, Eliza, Methuli and Neko
