Inner City South Community Reference Group

The first meeting for the School Community Reference Group for the proposed Inner South high school was held on Monday 15 August 2017.  The meeting was hosted in the offices of the Deputy Premier, and member for South Brisbane, Jackie Trad, and attended by foundation members:

·         Brisbane State High School – Principal and School Council Chair

·         Dutton Park State School – Principal and P&C Representative

·         West End State School – Principal and School Council Chair

·         University of Queensland – school partner

·         Department of Education and Training

The School Community Reference Group will meet on a regular basis to inform the planning and design of the new school, and to provide input into the business case which is required to be completed for the project.

Mark Campling, Regional Director Metropolitan Region has been appointed to oversee the delivery of the new high schools planned for Inner South and the Inner North (Valley).  Mark is well known to principals and school communities across Brisbane and South East Queensland, and will bring a strong understanding of local issues and priorities of the project.

The establishment of a new high school in the Inner South is a major commitment of the Queensland Government’s $500 million Building Future Schools Fund.  The fund has been created to support growing communities, the biggest ever investment in building new schools within five kilometres of the Brisbane CBD.

The new high school represents a forward investment in education infrastructure to meet ongoing population growth and education demand in the Inner South Brisbane over the next 20 years.  The new school will add to the network of high performing inner city schools, relieve enrolment pressure form Brisbane State High School and support the renewal of West End and Dutton Park State Schools.

This school will partner with the University of Queensland to provide innovative pathways and outstanding career opportunities for young Queenslanders.

The Government has committed to having this new school operational by January 2021.

The School Community Reference Group is a key stakeholder group for this project, providing input and discussions to inform the preparation of a comprehensive business case for the new school.  This process will be undertaken in accordance with Building Queensland requirements, and will inform the selection of a preferred school location.  The group will meet regularly over the coming months.  Upon engagement of a school principal, options for school governance models will be explored to oversee the start-up and operation of the new school.

The reference group is just one part of a broader community engagement and consultation program for the establishment of the new school.

Site planning and technical investigations are underway on potential sites.

Information on the project will be promoted through school newsletters.  If you have any queries, do not hesitate to contact me.

Dutton Park State School Master Plan

Last week, I met with Luke Georgiou, our Master Planner as part of the Building Future Schools.  He talked about the Master Planning Process being driven by growth, capacity building and renewal.  The goal is to plan and prioritise rather than ‘stage works’.

The Master Planning Process will be a consultative process driven by a ‘Steering Committee’.  This committee would be comprised of:  Principal and BSM, Parent Representative, Staff Representative, Master Planner, Architect and Facilities Manager.  The committee will initially meet on Monday 9 October 1-4pm.

During the process, the Steering Committee will operate in much the same way as the Inner City South Schools Reference Group; representatives will provide insights to the group but not be the decision makers.  Community members will be offered the opportunity to provide information through their appropriate representative, interviews and feedback on drafts.

We will determine the parent representative at our next P&C meeting held next Tuesday evening, 12 September, 2017.

Congratulations!

A very big congratulations to Michael in 4/5 M who will be going on to compete in shot put at State level.  We wish him all the best in his next event.

2018 Enrolments

It is the time of year that schools are again planning for the 2018 year.  It is vital in this planning process that we have a clear indication of enrolments for 2018.  If you will have a school aged child in 2018, please ensure that you have completed an enrolment package for your child.  As our school is now enrolment managed, we must prioritise enrolments who reside in-catchment or are siblings of currently enrolled students.  For families seeking enrolment from outside of catchment, while we cannot yet guarantee a place at our school, completed enrolment packages will be prioritised in order of receipt.

If you are aware that your child is not returning to Dutton Park State School in 2018, please also notify the Office.
